To utilize a pen turning mandrel on a Shopsmith machine, start by securing the mandrel in the lathe chuck. Ensure it’s tightened securely to prevent wobbling during operation. Next, mount the pen blank onto the mandrel, making sure it’s centered and aligned properly. Adjust the tailstock to support the opposite end of the mandrel, providing stability while turning. Turn on the lathe at a moderate speed suitable for the material you’re working with, and begin shaping the pen blank with your preferred turning tools. Take light, gradual passes to avoid chipping or splintering the wood. Continuously check the progress and adjust your technique as needed. Once satisfied with the shape, sand the pen blank to a smooth finish, gradually increasing the grit for a polished surface. Finally, apply your desired finish to complete the pen turning process.
