RGWOOD Pen Turning Mandrel (Shopsmith)

Are you ready to turn some custom pens? Our RGWOOD Pen Turning Mandrel (Shopsmith) features a precision-machined steel shaft that is spun by your lathe for pen turning. Pen mandrels hold the pen blank on the woodlathe and are essential to the pen turning process. If you’re looking to turn your first pen, be sure to read below for some instructions on how to get set up.

Only for use with shopsmith style lathes.

IMPORTANT: Ā This mandrel is exclusively for shopsmith lathes with 5/8ā€ plain bore.Ā If your lathe is #1MT, shop HERE instead. if your lathe is #2MT, shop HERE.

Beginner friendly and easy to set up

Once your pen blank is drilled, glued, and ready to be turned, insert the mandrel directly into the headstock of your lathe. Then, slide your blank onto the mandrel with the bushings. Tighten the brass ring snugly against the bushings, and secure your tail stock into place. Now you’re ready to turn!

Includes 4 bushings for standard slim line pens

4 bushings for slim line pen style projects are included, but this mandrel also accepts standard 7mm bushings for other pen shapes or profiles.

Here are some tips for pen turning that you might find useful:

Preparation:

Begin by gathering all the equipment and supplies needed. In addition to a lathe, you’ll need:

  1. a pen mandrel kit such as this one
  2. a barrel trimmer (if you need to pick up a pen mandrel and barrel trimmer, you might want to buy our deluxe pen mandrel kit instead of this one!)
  3. a drill press or a drill chuck for your lathe’s tail stockĀ
  4. a shopsmith-compatible live center to support the pen mandrel
  5. a pen kit with tubes, hardware, etc.
  6. a wood blank
  7. a drill bit - 7mm works for most pen kits and is included with all pen mandrels by RGWOOD.
  8. CA glue or super glue
  9. sandpaper
  10. finishing materials, such as polish or wax
  11. safety equipment (eye protection and dust mask recommended).Ā

To prepare the blanks, cut the wood blank to the required length. Drill a hole through the center of each blank to accommodate the pen tubes. We recommend using a drill press or a drill chuck on the lathe for this. Next, scuff the brass tubes with sandpaper to improve adhesion. Glue the scuffed tubes into the drilled blanks. Once the glue is dry, use a barrel trimmer to square the ends of the blanks.

Turning:

Mount your pen blank and bushings on the pen mandrel in the lathe, and tighten the tailstock. At a moderate speed suitable for the wood or material you're working with, begin shaping the pen blank with your preferred turning tools. A gouge or skew should do the trick. Be sure to take light cuts to avoid chipping the wood. Pay close attention to the bushings, as they indicate the finished diameter of your pen.

Once you’ve achieved your desired pen shape, you can sand and finish the pen on the lathe.Ā Sand the turned blanks, starting with a coarse grit and progressing to finer grits. This step is crucial for a smooth finish! Next, apply a finish of your choice, such as friction polish or lacquer. Buff the finish to a high shine, and apply wax for a final protective layer.

Assembling the Pen:

Press the pen components into the turned barrels. You can use a pen press or vise for precise assembly. Assemble the pen hardware according to the pen kit instructions.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety: Always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when working with a lathe.
  • Tool Control: Practice proper tool control to achieve smooth cuts and prevent accidents.
  • Patience: Pen turning requires patience and attention to detail.
  • Resources: Online video resources are a great way to visually learn how to perform each step. We will soon have our own pen turning tutorial video up on our YouTube channel, keep an eye open for it!
