The #2 Sweep Gouges by Pfeil remove excess wood quickly, especially from a flat surface, where the corners of a flat chisel would dig in and get stuck. Sweep gouges also allow you to stop-cut around round objects and carve precise grooves and trenches. The higher the sweep number, the greater the curve.
The series #2 Sweep Gouges by Pfeil Swiss Made are commonly used to carve your wood blank into a rough form, and for working on large areas. Use them to remove excess wood quickly, especially from a flat surface, where the corners of a flat chisel would dig in and get stuck. Sweep gouges also allow you to stop-cut around round objects and carve precise grooves and trenches.
The #2 sweep gouges have the gentlest curve shape of all Pfeil's sweep gouge style tools. In terms of the curve of the blade, #2 is one step above Pfeil's #1 straight chisels, which are flat with no curve.
We carry all of Pfeil's other sweep gouges, including #1 (straight), #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, and #11 (veiner). The higher the series number is, the deeper the curve on the tool will be. For example, the #11 has a much steeper curve (like a deep U-shape) than the #5, and the #3 has a much gentler curve than the #9.

The environment and our living space are important to us. Precious resources like water, air and energy are used sparingly and as efficiently as possible in Pfeil's manufacturing. Carving tools should be handled with care. They should be stored in roll-up cases, wooden boxes or wall-mounted tool racks. The tools should not be allowed to fall on the floor or impact one another. This will avoid mistakes when cutting and also injuries. In order to prevent corrosion (rust etc.), the tools must be stored in a dry room. For longer periods of storage, it is recommended that the tool blades are protected with a thin coat of light oil. Â
