RGWOOD Handle End Kit for DIY Turning Tool Handles
Our RGWOOD Handle End Kit for DIY Turning Tool Handles provides you with the hardware needed to turn your handmade turning tool handle into something much more versatile.
These handle ends are designed to be epoxied into a wooden handle. Using the set screws to lock your tool into place, quickly and easily swap your unhandled gouges and skews as you need. These come in 1/2” bore with 2 set screws to accept 1/2” tool shanks, or 5/8” bore with 4 set screws to accept 5/8” tool shanks AND flat tangs. Please be sure to select the corresponding size for the tool shanks you intend to be working with.
This kit is made up of an aluminum handle end, steel ferrule, and hex key. It’s important to note that this kit does NOT include a wood blank, handle, or tool shank. If you’re looking for ready-to-go interchangeable tool handles, we have two styles available in various sizes: carbon fiber collet system handles, and aluminum or steel core soft vinyl grip handles.

Each purchase of one of these kits includes:
- One aluminum end to receive 1/2” OR 5/8” tool shanks (must select size from the drop down menu)
- One steel ferrule for strengthening and protecting the wood on the tool end of your handle
- One hex key to tighten the tool-gripping set screws

Key Features:
- Designed to be fastened with epoxy to your own handmade tool handle. You know exactly what you like in a handle - now you can customize and turn your own!
- Available in two sizes, to accept 1/2” or 5/8” tool shanks (be sure to select the right size end to fit your unhandled tools from the drop down menu above).
- Perfect for gripping and interchanging unhandled tools easily, in a handle of your own making.
- Set screws for easily securing tool shanks into place (The 1/2” end has 2 set screws. The 5/8” end has 4 and thus can accept flat tang tools)
- Steel ferrule protects the wood and eliminates splitting at the tool end of the handle
- The 5/8” end is compatible with our RGWOOD 5/8" Double Ended Bowl Gouge and our Bowl Sanding Kit
- The 1/2” end is compatible with our Unhandled 1/2" Spindle Gouge and 1/2" Double Ended Bowl Gouge
Watch Joe go through the process of turning and assembling a handle with the 1/2” aluminum end kit:
Directions:
- Begin by boring a hole into your wooden handle blank to fit the size of handle end you purchased. The diameter of the hole must be as follows: 3/4” wide for the 1/2” handle end, or 7/8” wide for the 5/8” handle end. There will be a little side to side wiggle room between the handle and the end at first - that’s intentional and will be filled with epoxy. The depth you will need to bore is 1-1/4” deep at a minimum. If your tool shanks need to be set further back into the handle or are double ended, bore as far as you need to be able to fit them securely and to the desired depth in your handle.
- Next, you’ll need to create a tenon on the bore end of your wooden handle, for the ferrule. After rounding out the corners of your blank, use a marking tool and the steel ferrule to map out the section you’ll be trimming down. Be precise with your measurements. Then turn your tenon so that it’s just slightly thicker than the inside diameter of the ferrule for a tight tap-on fit, and so that the ferrule sits flush with the end of the handle once applied. Tap the ferrule onto the tenon with a mallet.
- Turn and sand your handle to your desired shape.
- Now, using whatever strong epoxy you have on hand and following it’s recommended directions, apply epoxy to the inside of the handle and to the section of the aluminum end to be inserted, and press together. Use a rag to wipe away any excess epoxy leakage.
- After the epoxy has cured, use your favourite finishing oil or wax on the wood areas of the handle.
- Once dry, insert your favourite unhandled turning tool, tighten the set screws, and get to turning your next project!
