Martel Hook Tool - Small (tool end only)
The Martel Hook Tool - Small is a wonderful option for those challenging projects that require end grain hollowing, where gouges and ring tools just don't cut it.
This tool has a short tang which must be mounted to a longer shank. We recommend pairing it with the Martel shank and handles (see the link below) for extra reach in those deep vases, but any shank featuring a 1/4″ hole and set screw will hold onto this tool just fine.
In typical cross grain bowl turning, one would use a gouge to hollow out the interior shape, cutting towards centre from the widest point in order to cut with the grain. However, when turning vases and any other projects where the wood grain is in line with the axis of rotation, one must cut from centre out. A gouge has a hard time cutting interior curves in this direction, and ring tools are prone to twisting and catching, but the Martel Hook Tool is specially designed for this application and solves those issues. The hook tool keeps its cutting edge in line with the tool handles centre point, allowing for excellent control and stability of the tool in pull cuts while minimizing any twisting force that ring tools are prone to. The unique shape also allows the tool to be flipped 180 degrees for boring the pilot hole.
The small hook tool features a 1/4″ tang, and is ideal for cutting end grain hollows from ~1″-6″ in diameter, and comes with a small pamphlet on working procedure for the tool. For handles, sharpening tools, or complete kits, check our linked products below.
For projects with a larger than 6″ internal diameter, consider the medium hook tool ( 3/8″ tang, for ~6″-10″ diameter hollow) or large MHT (1/2″ tang, for ~10″ and up diameter hollow) options.
