Carbide Turning Tool Advantages

Are carbide tools better than traditional turning tools? No, but they’re also not worse, just different. Traditional tools will leave a cleaner finish and can be more versatile, but the advantages of carbide tools are worth exploring too!

• Sharpening

Carbide tools do not require fancy jigs and grinders to stay sharp. They will dull over time, but when they do you simply loosen the insert screw and rotate the cutter to use a fresh new face. Once every edge has been used, you can use a fine diamond file to sharpen them, or since the cutters are so cheap, simply throw the cutter away and replace it with another.

• Ease of use

Many beginner turners prefer using carbide tools to traditional gouges as they’re easier to use. The flat bottom of the tool shank keeps the cutter level, and the scraping geometry of the cutter helps prevent against the catches that may frighten users of gouges or skew chisels.

• Affordability

Carbide tools used to be expensive, but with recent innovations in manufacturing that is no longer the case! Now a full set of carbide tools can be found for less than the cost of a single HSS steel bowl gouge.
